          An Overview of Breast Feeding

Breast feeding is the natural and healthy way to nurture a baby. Every year,
thousands of women breast feed their newborns. It should be easy and trouble
free for most mothers. A good start that helps to assure breast feeding is a
happy experience for both mother and baby. How can you, a new mother, get
breast feeding established the right way? How can your baby's father be
supportive of breastfeeding? And what can you do when things don't go as
planned? You will find the answers you are looking for here. This website is a
wake-up call for a society that still doesn't understand the full value of breast
feeding, and an extensive problem-solving guide for the mother who does.

    Breast Feeding Basics

In some parts of the world, babies can only survive if they are treated with breast
milk. It is the natural, physiological way of feeding babies, as human milk is the
nourishment created specifically for human infants. Formulas derived from cows
or soybeans are only similar superficially, advertising which states otherwise is
    misleading.

The vast majority of mothers are perfectly capable of breast feeding their babies
exclusively for about six months. In fact, most mothers produce more than
enough milk. Unfortunately, outdated hospital routines based on bottle feeding
still predominate in too many health care institutions and make breastfeeding
difficult, or even impossible, for too many mothers and babies. For breastfeeding
to be properly well established, a good start in the early few days can be crucial.
Admittedly, even with a not-so-good start, many mothers and babies still manage.

The trick to breast feeding is getting the baby to latch on well. A baby who
latches on properly, gets milk with ease. A baby who latches on poorly has more
difficulty getting milk, and especially so if the supply is low. A poor latch is similar
to giving a baby a bottle with a nipple hole that is too small - the bottle is full of
milk, but the baby cannot access it without difficulty.. When a baby is latching on
poorly, he may also cause the mother to experience pain in the nipple. And if the
baby does not get milk easily, he will usually stay on the breast for long periods,
thus aggravating the pain for the mother. Unfortunately anyone can claim that
the baby is latched on well, even if he isn't. Too many people who should know
better just don't have a clue on what a good latch is.

    Recommended Books on Breast Feeding
The long-awaited third edition of "Breast feeding
and Human Lactation"
retains many of the features
which made earlier editions so useful. This new
edition has a single editor, Jan Riordan, co-editor of
the previous two editions, who has written or
co-authored many of the chapters.

In its 745 pages of text and appendices A-H, the text
covers anatomy and physiology, the normal course of
lactation, maternal and infant pathologies, drugs
during breastfeeding, cultural factors, research
methodologies, and much more.

This should be required reading for any physician
caring for the breastfeeding mother or the breastfed
baby. With all of the mythology surrounding breast
feeding and the wide range of advice given to nursing
mothers, it is essential that practitioners give
accurate, informed advice. Reading this book will
allow health care professionals to do so.

This is an amazing text that answers almost every
question the reader or a patient can bring to the
table. Easy to read with good references. This is a
must have for anyone who treats lactating women. As
a mother I found the book to be very helpful, as a
medical professional this book has been an excellent
reference when treating lactating women
