Cause of Eye Itch/Redness
Bacterial conjunctivitis (pinkeye). Your eyes are itchy, red, and swollen, with a thick, whitish or
yellowish discharge. Your eyes are also stuck shut when you wake up. Conjunctivitis, or pinkeye,
is an inflammation of the membrane that covers the white of the eye and the inner surface of the
eyelids; this particular type of conjunctivitis is caused by a bacterial infection. It is potentially
serious because it can cause ulceration of the cornea. It must be treated with antibiotic eyedrops,
Untreated pinkeye can permanently impair vision. It’s highly contagious and is quite commonly
    caused by sharing eye makeup.

Viral conjunctivitis. Your eyes are itchy, red and swollen, and they are producing a clear, watery
discharge. Pinkeye that is caused by a virus usually has symptoms that are less severe and
bothersome than those of bacterial conjunctivitis. Viral conjunctivitis may be a complication of a
cold or influenza, and it can take several days to clear up. Because the cause is viral, antibiotics
    won’t help.

Keratitis. Your eyes are inflamed and painful, but you have no other symptoms. You have been
waiting your hard contact lenses longer than recommended, or you’ve been overexposed to
sunlight. Your corneas may be injured.

Blepharitis. Your eyes are red and itchy. The eyelid edges are inflamed and scaly. This condition
often accompanies dandruff. If self-care measures don’t work or your symptoms are severe, call
your nurse information service or doctor. You may require an ointment and warm salt water rinses
    for the eye.

Dry eye. Your eyes are red and dry, and you have few or no tears. The white of your eye is red and
swollen, and your eye feels hot and gritty. Dry eye sometimes accompanies rheumatoid arthritis. It
occurs more often in women than men and is a frequent complaint during menopause.
